How do I get a locum insurance quote?
How do I pay for my locum insurance?
Once the application has been approved and you are happy with the terms of the policy, you can make payment to start the cover.
You can pay by the following options:
- Credit or debit card via the website (there is no charge for this).
- BACS payment
- Cheque (payable to LocumPlan)
- Direct debit
Please note, direct debits are handled via Close Premium Finance. They will take 10 monthly payments. They will also charge an additional 9.85% of the total premium.
How often is my policy reviewed?
Policies run for 12 months and are renewed annually. You will be sent a renewal invitation around 4 weeks before your cover is due to expire.
This is a good time to review your cover and look to:
- add new colleagues
- add new partners
- add new employees
- remove people who may have left the business
What is Insurance Premium Tax or IPT?
Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) is a tax that is paid on all general insurance policies where the risk is in the UK.
Insurances liable for IPT include:
- car insurance
- home insurance
- travel insurance
- other protection cover
- locum insurance
Insurances that don’t attract IPT:
- life insurance policies
- long-term plans with investment elements
How much is Insurance Premium Tax or IPT?
Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) is 12% of the premium. It is automatically included in any premiums we quote.
How do I renew my policy?
You locum insurance cover does not renew automatically.
You will be sent your locum insurance renewal invitation 4 weeks before your current cover is due to expire.
It will be sent with:
- policy wording
- insurance product information document
- health declaration form
If you want to renew, then let us know as soon as possible. We will then let the underwriters know.
It is important that you complete the health declaration form so the underwriters can review the details. This may also allow them to delete existing exclusions.
Does locum insurance cover compassionate leave?
Yes, our locum insurance covers compassionate leave. It will pay the weekly sum insured for a maximum of 4 weeks.
Does locum insurance cover maternity leave?
Yes, locum insurance covers maternity leave.
A lump sum is paid after the claimant resumes normal duties. This is 5 times the weekly sum insured or £2,500, whichever is less.
Does locum insurance cover paternity leave?
Yes, locum insurance covers paternity leave.
A one-off payment is paid out after the claimant resumes normal duties. This is the lesser of the weekly sum insurance, or £1,000.
Does locum insurance cover jury service?
Yes, locum insurance covers jury service.
The insurance will pay the weekly sum insured or £250 a day, whichever is less. It is payable for a maximum of 52 weeks.
Does locum insurance cover suspension due to negligence?
Yes, locum insurance is suspended due to negligence.
It will pay £1,000 a week or the weekly sum insured, whichever is less, for a maximum of 6 weeks.
What if my return from holiday is delayed?
Locum insurance covers you if your return from holiday is delayed.
The policy will pay the weekly sum insured for a maximum of 4 weeks.
How much is the accidental death payment?
The accidental death payment is £10,000.
This can be increased to suit your needs.
Does locum insurance cover stress and mental health, including anxiety and depression?
This cover is excluded in the initial policy wording.
The underwriters are happy to review this once they have assessed your completed proposal form or a declaration of health form.
If the information meets their criteria, then the exclusion maybe removed.
Can locum insurance be used to cover pre-existing medical conditions?
Pre-existing medical conditions that have appeared in the last 12 months are initially excluded from the cover.

- nuclear, chemical and biological weapons following an act of terrorism
- taking part in military operations
- taking part in aeronautics
- mountaineering and rock climbing
- racing
- self-inflicted injury
- war
- insanity
- radioactive contamination
- pregnancy and childbirth
- HIV/AIDs (unless caused by needlestick injury)
